Montecastelli is proud to announce its hosting philosophy in
line with its agriculture practices: Bioagriturismo is hospitality with a
sustainable twist. We collect
garbage separately and use as much as possible of our leftovers in our
composting facility, we also use only certified eco soaps in kitchen and
bathrooms, for washing your 400 thread count sheets, and have switched to
energy saving light bulbs. We use
gray-waters for irrigation of the olive grove in the middle of summer, and are
planning to put a photovoltaic carport on the property that will make
Montecastelli energy independent in the future. Jens is originally from northern Germany and came to italy when he was 18 years old to study Italian language and architecture. Staying on in Italy after he finished architerctural school in Berlin, he restored several historic Tuscan buildings using traditional methods and materials. From 1993 until 1996, Jens dedicated most of his time to restoring Montecastelli from an old ruin into the magical place that it has become today. In 1997, he started Montecastelli Selections, originally in order to export their organic olive oil, Primo Olio, but shortly thereafter as a company also dedicated to the exploration and promotion of small estate Italian wines, with special emphasis on indigenous grape varieties. |
